The Great Shrine Hall of the Dhamma Sarana Temple and
Melbourne Vesak/Poson Celebrations

The great shrine hall of Dhamma Sarana temple in Keysborough was ceremoniously opened on the 18th of July 2010 in the presence of a large gathering and distinguished guests. A large number of Venerable Theros from Australian and overseas temples were present at the opening ceremony. A colorful Perehera and number of religious activities were included in the ceremony.

Mhindu Youth Development Workshops

Mihindu Children’s Foundation & Cultural Centre has joined with Melbourne Sinhala, Cultural & Community Services Foundation, to organise training programs on development of knowledge based skills, for school children and youth. The first development program for young people was conducted by a Performance Coach and a Management Trainer at the National Australia Bank. A large number of school children attended this event and it was concluded successfully. This workshop focused on Public Speaking, Presentation Skills and Broadcasting Techniques. Rasingh Deviyo will be staged on the 21st August 2010 (for the third time) at the Yan Yean Theater, 33 Ferres Blvd, South Morang, Mel: 183 A10.

1. These videos contain extracts from the show staged on the 17th of July 2010.
2. Tharanga Dandeniya, the director and the writter of Rasingh Deviyo, is in discussion with Vineetha Wijerathne about the play. Tharanga has won national level awards in Sri Lankan drama festivals including the National Drama Festival.

Ruvinie Dunuwila is one of renowned Sri Lankan vocalists residing in Melbourne. She has contributed to many Sri Lankan teledramas such as TB Illangarathna’s Abha Yaluwo and also she has worked with many Sri Lankan artists such as Ranil Mallawarachchi, Marvin Perera and Keerthi Pasquel.



Pranama Prasanga: A Tribute to the Three Ladies

Pranama Prasanga - A tribute concert for the three ladies, Malini Jyasinghe, Ramani Liyanaarachchi and Devika Rupasinghe was held on the 26th of June 2010 with attendance of a large crowd. Some traditional and modern dance items of this concert presented by Rangana Udumbara Dance Troupe, Vishver Rangayathanaya and Ama Siriwardena Performing Dance Academy are included in this feature. This is an extract from our News Bulletin dated 27 June 2010.


Mahinda Wijeratne is in discussion with Professor Weeramantry. The Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research based in Colombo has conducted a project involving students of the universities across the country to study and investigate post-war evolution of peace and harmony amongst the Sri Lankan young generation of different racial backgrounds. An emeritus professor of Monash University and a retired judge of International Court, Professor Weeramantry, the Chairman of the Weeramantry International Centre is currently in Melbourne and Mahinda Wijeratne is talking to the Professor about his latest project to research and investigate evolution of ethnic harmony in Sri Lanka based on Training for Trusteeship annual workshops.

A dhamma sermon delivered by Venerable Habarakada Sumanasara Thero. This Dhamma sermon was organised by the Mihindu Children's Foundation and Mr. Indrasiri Devage.

1. The great shrine hall of Dhamma Sarana temple in Keysborough was ceremoniously opened on last Sunday in the presence of a large gathering and distinguished guests. A large number of Venerable Theros from Australian and overseas temples were present at the opening ceremony. A colorful Perehera and number of religious activities were included in the ceremony.

The story of this drama is based on legends, folk lore, historical records during the period of King Rajasingha 2nd with contemporary simulations. 1.The first cabinet meeting in Kilinochchi chaired by the President Rajapakse was held last week.
2.As a quick response to a complaint made over the phone by the farther of the deceased Dr. Miss Niluka Lakmali Wijenayaka, the President appoints a specialist committee demanding an immediate investigation. Dr. Niluka Lakmali Wijenayaka passed away after contracting Dengue while working in the Dengue Pediatric Section in the Badulla hospital.
3.Sri Lankas first ever liver transplant surgery was successfully completed last week after a marathon operation conducted by a team of 15 doctors in the Colombo National Hospital.
4.Tharu Dilena Reyak, a gala concert organized by the Seva Vanitha Unit under the Brave Hearts project was staged last week presenting a galaxy of prominent Sri Lankan artists. Some video footage of this gala concert is included in this news bulletin.

1. Minister Wimal Weerawansa has ended the death-fast on last Saturday after the President visited him and urged him to abandon the protest. The minister was admitted to the military hospital for emergency treatment. The fast was held outside the main UN compound in Colombo.
2. Sri Lankan spin-wizard Muttaiya Muralidharan has announced that he would quit test cricket after the next first test against India on the 18th of July. Murali's farewell speech (in Sinhala) is included in this news bulletin.

1. It is planned to ceremoniously open the great shrine hall of Dhamma Sarana temple in Keysborough on the 18th of July. The chief incumbent of the temple Venerable Naotunne Vijitha Thero provides information about the ceremony.
2. The combined schools netball team of Sri Lanka participated in the Waverley International Schools Netball Championship which was held in the Waverley Netball Centre. 1. The first National Victory Day was celebrated in a grand scale in Colombo on last Friday to commemorate courage, dignity and the selfless sacrifices paid by the war heroes. The nation paid tribute to all war heroes consist of Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and the Civil Defense Force during the colourful pageant held at the Galle Face Green which demonstrated the military might of Sri Lanka.

1. A special Dhamma sermon was delivered by Venerable Harispaththuwe Ariyawanshalankara Thero at the Kesborough Dhamma Sarana temple.
2. A relatively large Vesak Lantern and a Thorana (Pandal) were constructed by Mr. and Mrs. Kulan Ranasighe and displayed at their residence in Nobel Park. Mr. and Mrs. Ranasighe have demonstrated a fundamental Sri Lankan custom of displaying individually constructed Vesak decorations to general public. This large Thorana and Lantern will be redisplayed at Dandenoing Dhamma Deepa temple during the Poson celebrations (on 19/20 and 26/27 of June 2010).
3. Professor Weeramantry delivered a lecture regarding “Unity of Sri Lankan youths” which was organised by the Sinhala Cultural and Community Services Association.
4. A musical concert was staged in aid of providing fundamental sanitary facilities to Helasirigama. This event was organised by the Aus Lanka Audio Visual Association.

3. Venerable Harispatthuwe Ariyawansalankara Thero delivered a special Damma sermon on Saturday the 22nd of May, to a large gathering at the Damma Sarana temple in Keysborough.
4. A session of Bhakthi Geetha (Buddhist devotional songs) was conducted by the seniors on Sunday the 23rd of May during the regular gathering of senior citizens in the East Bentleigh community centre. This event was organised by the Sinhala Cultural and Community Services Foundation.
5. The most senior member of the Sinhala community in Melbourne, as known as Loku Amma, passed away on the 18th Tuesday at the age of 96. Her funeral took place on 22nd of May, Saturday, at the Blair Chapel of the Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

1. President Rajapakse has taken over as the new Chairman of the G15 on last Tuesday at the G15 summit held in Tehran, the capital city of Iran.
2. Floods in 8 districts due to pre-monsoons and monsoons have affected over 500,000 people. Eighteen deaths were reported by last Friday. The government has initiated a program to provide permanent accommodation for the people living along cannel banks.

5. A renowned vocalist and music director Mr. Narada Disasekara has passed away on last Wednesday at the age of 77. Mr Disasekara won the award for the best male vocalist at the Sarasaviya film festival in 1964 for Galana Gangaki Jivithe from Ranmuthuduwa. 1. A Sri Lankan cultural festival was held on last Saturday (15/5) as part of a Multicultural Cinema Project organised by the Whittlesea Council. The Sri Lankan segment was organised by the Northern Melbourne Sri Lankan Association. A number of cultural events including Sri Lankan music/songs (Daya and the Clan), dancing (Visharad Keshala Apparakka) and screening of the highly acclaimed Sri Lankan movie Aba were the key features of this cultural festival. 2. As part of Vesak celebrations, a session of Bhakthi Gee (Buddhist devotional songs) was held on last Sunday (16/5) at the Dandenong Arts Center. This event was organised by the Aus Audio Visual Arts association.

1. Ranaviru week commemoration ceremonies are underway to mark the anniversary of freeing Mother Lanka from terrorism and to felicitate war heroes.
2. About two hundred thousand pilgrims were stranded in the area of Somawathiya Maha Viharaya due to heavy rain and traffic congestion. Government has directed emergency services including army and air force to provide essential supplies and for the evacuation of affected people. Two deaths of seniors have been reported.
3. Ailing mother of Velupillai Prabhakaran , Ms. Parvathi Pillai, has returned to Sri Lanka from Malaysia. In last April, she has been refused an entry visa to seek medical treatment at the Chennai airport. Later, the Indian government has imposed a number of conditions to Ms. Pillai in order to grant an entry visa for treatment and stated that she should leave India once her treatment has completed.

1. President Rajapakse led ruling party has secured a landslide victory by obtaining 144 seats based on the final outcome of the general election. UNP managed to secure only 51 seats. Tamil Alliance has received 13 seats while General Fonseka and JVP receiving 5 seats.

1. The Sinhala and Hindu New Year festival organised and hosted by the Old Boys Association of the Sri Lnkan German Technical Training Institute for all Sri Lankans living in Melbourne was held today, Sunday, for the 18th time at the Dandenong show ground. It is estimated that more than 6000 people attended the New Year celebrations this year.
2. The musical fiesta Wasantha Udanaya organised by Skyway Travel and Cargo was held yesterday, Saturday, at the Springvale Town Hall.
3. The Sinhala and Hindu New Year festival organised and hosted by the University of Sri Jayewardenepura Alumni Association was held yesterday at the Brandon Park Community centre, Glen Waverley. 10 April 2010 Election News Brief

The ruling party, UPFA, obtained a massive victory in Sri Lanka’s general election held on last Thursday. UPFA has secured 117 seats so far while UNP is managing to secure only 46 seats. DNA (Gen Sarath Fonseka and JVP) has lost grounds and been reduced to 5 seats. TNA has secured 12 seats. So far results for 180 seats have been released out of 196 contested seats. The electoral commissioner has ordered a revote in Nawalapitiya and Trincomalee. Polls ended relatively peacefully without large scale violence. However, low level violent incidents were reported in some places.

Renowned singer in the 70’s and 80's Abeywardena Balasooriya has passed away on 27/3/10 at the age of 63. The funeral arrangements have been made for the 31st of March in Colombo.

9th Feburary 2010 Special News Update

1. General Sarath Fonseka has been arrested on Monday evening (8/02/10). Since he has refused to comply, he has been forcibly removed.

2. Russia’s premier university, the People’s Friendship University of Moscow (as known as Patrice Lumumba University) has conferred a honorary doctorate to the President Rajapakse for his contributions to world peace, totally eliminating terrorism from Sri Lanka and improving cultural and educational ties between two countries.

UPDATE: Mrs Fonseka says that General Fonseka was carried away (like an animal) when he was arrested. This is contrary to some claims that he was dragged away. The army claims that he was not assaulted during the arrest and assures his wellbeing. Meanwhile, police has used tear gas to disperse a large crowed gathered in support of General Sarath Fonseka in Hultsdorf, central Colombo.

News Flash: Two veteran artists have passed away

Veteran teledrama and film actor Mr. H. A. Perera has passed away at the age of 60. Mr. Perera became popular with his role as Dias Mudalali in the teledrama Doo Daruwo in early nineties and recently through ITN's Muthu Kirilli.



Mr. Pathiraja Dayananda, a well known film and teledrama director has passed away at the age of 65. He has directed well acclaimed films such as Hathdinnath Tharu and Selinage Walawwa.
